HCPL Library Lingo
Below are some library terms and acronyms defined for you:
AC - Administrative Council
ALA - American Library Association http://www.ala.org. The olderst and largest library association in the world, ALA's mission is to promote the highest quality library and information services and public access to information. (Source: ALA Web page)
Annual Report -
Banned patrons - People who are no longer welcome in the library because of behavior.
Bar Code - A machine-readable series of numbers on a book to help identify it in the library system. Circulation clerks scan the bar code of a book to check it out or in.
Bess - Security Filter.
BIB Record - Bibliographic record of a library item, usually containing basic information, such as title, author, and format, as well as other information useful for identifying the item.
Board of Trustees -
Book Leasing Program - Books that are rented for a period of time and then returned to the vendor.
BRAC - Base Realignment and Closures
Cataloging - Creation of a bibliographic record that describes a title and provides access points such as title, author, series and subjects.
CEUs - Continuing Education Units. Librarians and library associates are required by DLDS to earn six Continuing Education Units every five years to ensure recertification. Ten CEUs make up one credit. Staff, therefore, need to earn sixty units for recertification within a five year period.
Check In - To take items off a customers account (library card).
Check Out - To place items on a customers account (library card).
Circulation Services - Employees who handle the day to day process of books (cki, cko, and delivery). Resolving blocks on patrons cards.
Collection - All items in the HCPL system.
Collection Management - The process of selecting and purchasing of new materials for the library, as well as weeding older, outdated, or damaged materials.
Conversion - A local HCPL term that describes the process of completing an item record by scanning the barcode and adding the call number and other relevant information. Following conversion, an item is ready to be sent to the owning branch to be added to its collection.
Copy Bib Record - A bibliographic record available through OCLC that HCPL Technical Services staff may copy for our use.
Databases - A structured record or collection of data stored in a computer.
Dewey Decimal System - A system of library classification developed by Melvil Dewey that attempts to classify all knowledge into ten
DNO - Do not own .
DLDS - Division of Library Development & Services, a division of the Maryland State Department of Education .
EAN - European Article Number, similar to a UPC (Universal Product Code), is a barcoding standard of thirteen digits, used to identify a book or other item. The EAN is replacing the 10-digit ISBN.
Fast Adds - To give a temporary bib record to an item.
Fiscal Year- Runs from July to June.
FMLA - Family and Medical Leave Act
Folksonomy - A collaborative creation and management of subject tags to identify and categorize content. Unlike the more traditional subject indexing, metadata is created by experts as well as users of the content. Folksonomies are composed of keywords rather than controlled vocabulary whose creation depends on experts. Examples of folksonomies can be seen in Web 2.0 content in sites such as FlickR, deli.cio.us, Library Thing, and even HCPL's AquaBrowser.
FOS - Found on Shelf.
Foundation - A non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors whose mission is to raise funds for and awareness of the library.
Friends of the Library - Organization composed of people who raise funds for a specific branch.
Genre - Books or items of the same category, such as mysteries, westerns, or romances .
Green Dots - New Books; generally, green dots are removed after six months.
HELP Manual - Where to find Emergency Procedures.
HIP - Horizon Information Portal .
HORIZON - Integrated Library System created by Dynix that provides storage and retrieval of information about items in HCPL.
Information/Reference Staff - Librarians and library associates who provided resources to library patrons in answering their queries.
Services can be provided in person in the library or electronically through a virtual reference service.
ILL - Interlibrary Loan – a cooperative system of borrowing among libraries in the larger library community around the country.
Intellectual Freedom - “Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view
without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement
Innovation - Process of implementing new ideas, putting ideas into action that produce a result.
ISBN - International Standard Book Number – a number assigned to each unique title of a book to identify it.
I Type - Item type, i.e.: talking book, adult fiction.
LATI - Library Associate Training Institute .
Leading from any Position - A workshop desiged to provide new ways to motivate, problem solve, delegate, and build courage/confidence in staff to lead from any position they might hold in HCPL.
Learning Libraries - Mental model, shared vision, team program, personal mastery, system impact.
Library Bill of Rights - ALA’s six guiding policies that ensure intellectual freedom and access to information for library patrons -
Library Card - One of the most important cards a person can possess, this little item provides big benefits, including access to
information and the ability to borrow items from the library system.
Library Loot - Generous reward system of scrip given to staff for attending training and other library functions.
LSC - Learning and Sharing Collection, a collection of educational toys and books used by teachers and parents alike to provide basic
learning skills to children.
MARC record - Machine-Readable Cataloging record. MARC standards in a catalog consist of formats that provide bibliographic
information about books and other library materials.
MARC tag - A field in a MARC record that contains a specific type of information about a title; for exxample the MARC tag 260 contains information about the publisher.
MARINA - An interlibrary loan system used to reserve books and other items outside of the HCPL system .
Materials Management Divison -- HCPL's division that selects and purchases print and non-print materials for the library
MILO - Maryland Interlibrary Loan Organization.
MLA - Maryland Library Association
MM - Mixed Media
MSRS - Maryland State Retirement System
NOS - Not on shelf.
OTG - Opening the Gift – an outreach effort by HCPL in which library staff visit the homes of daycare providers to read stories and engage
in other activities.
OCLC - Online Computer Library Center, founded in 1967 as a nonprofit library service dedicated to furthering information access
Original Bib record - An original bibliographic record of an item in the system created by HCPL Technical Services staff, if no record is available through OCLC.
Page - Is a person in the library that reshelves books, does the pull list and a lot of grunt work.
Passport - HCPL’s intranet Website, providing information access to library staff only.
PLA - Public Library Association
Policy - The way the Library wants things accomplished.
PPM - Personnel Policy Manual
Probationary Period - A time period to gain adequate knowledge, skill and abilities for the position for which the person was hired.
Procedure - A particular way of accomplishing something.
Professional Collection - A collection of resource materials for library professionals; generally, this collection is available for staff use
only.
PRS - Performance recognition system
PTC - Parent-Teacher Collection – a collection of materials that supports parents and teachers in their efforts to further the education of
children.
Pull List - As customers request items this generates a report, someone then pulls the item from the collection and send it to the hold
location.
Red lined - Ordered materials that are rushed through because of immediate need.
RFID - Radio Frequency Identification
Rolling Reader - A mobile library that stops at schools and rec centers.
Sailor - Maryland’s public information network, a project of Maryland public libraries, Sailor leverages Internet technology to aid resident
access to information.
SAM - System Account Manager
Serials - Magazines
Silver Reader - A mobile library that stops at senior centers and nursing homes.
SLRC - State Library Resource Center – Housed in the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Central Branch, SLRC provides materials, information,
and services to all citizens of Maryland.
SOS - Strict on Sale Date
SRP - Summer Reading Program (See below.)
Standing Orders - Orders that are filled automatically
STC - Story Time Collection
STG - Sharing the Gift – an outreach effort that uses volunteers to do programming at nursery schools and daycare centers.
Substitute Staff - People who are available to work temporarily for another staff members.
Summer Reading Program -- A library reading program that encourages children to maintain their reading skills over the summer.
Sunshine Club - Funds employees voluntarily collect to use in branch for cards, flowers, treats, and celebrations.
Talking books - Audiobooks on tape or CDs
Technical Services - Department of HCPL that processes purchased materials to make them shelf-ready.
Timesheet - Where you record your work time so that you get paid.
Vendors - Companies that provide materials and services to the library, such as book companies or database providers.
WRP - Winter Reading Program – a reading program for adults and young adults during winter months.
YALSA - Young Adult Library Services Association – a division of ALA devoted to serving young adult:
